AK Adventure Day 59: From Anchorage to Seward

My TX peep and I had a couple hour delay (more checking of the van brakes—AARGH!!)...not to worry...there is always a local coffee shop to visit...and breakfast at the grocery store across the street!!

A rainy day in the neighborhood...but a little rain NEVER stopped US from having a GOOD TIME!!...Let the ADVENTURE BEGIN!!...stopped at Bird Point for some photo ops...then on to Byron Glacier and Begich-Boggs Visitor Center.

BTW Tidbit # 1: Salmon can swim at an estimated 14mph!!  Common Names...King-Chinook, Red-Sockeye, Silver-Coho, Pink-Humpy, Chum-Dog. Average life spans...kings 3-7 yrs, reds 4-5 yrs, silvers 3-5 yrs, chums 3-6 yrs, pinks 2 yrs. Kings avg 30 lbs, reds avg 4-8 lbs, silvers avg 7-18 lbs, pinks avg 4-8 lbs.

Then off through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel to Whittier!!...a delicious lunch at Varly’s Swiftwater Seafood Cafe...found the infamous POW t-shirts...sampled some delicious Whittier FUDGE...took in the local Whittier tourist sites....

BTW Tidbit # 2: the Begich Towers Condominium (an arcology)...the other completely out of place high rise building in Whittier...houses almost all of the residents of Whittier!!...plus government offices...along with MOST of the town’s resident services!!  WEIRD!!  Can’t imagine living there in Whittier in the winter!!

We ventured off on a hike to Horsetail Falls...which started off SO LOVELY...then became a BIG climb up rocks and through all sorts of trail-side weeds...so we opted to just check it off our list and...been there...done enough of THAT!!

Back out through the Whittier tunnel...YAY!!...NO prisoner of Whittier this time!!...onward and southward to Seward!!...a FUN dinner at Red’s Burger Bus...then overnighting at Miller’s Landing RV Park with a lovely view of fishing boats in the Whittier Harbor—the Gateway to the Prince William Sound.

Tomorrow...BIG Kenai Fjord’s Tour Adventure Day!!
