Next stop...delicious breakfast at one of my favorite Homer restaurants...Fresh Sourdough Express. Organic...local...YUM!!
They make their own bread from freshly milled wheat berries!!...I had the dark rye...a side of fresh local greens, sautéed with garlic and caramelized onions...WOWZER!! I licked the plate clean!!
Sister wanted to visit the Kilcher Homestead...so OFF we went to catch the 10:00am tour.
The sod-roofed homestead cabin has a magnificent view of the mountains/glaciers across Kachemak Bay. That fellow is one of the Kilchers...I don’t remember which one...since I don’t watch their reality show!!...It was a 2 hour commentary rather than tour...which I’ll admit was a bit much for me...but for those visitors who are familiar with the show, it was a super memorable experience!!
Quick stop at the Fritz Creek General Store again for a “to go” drink....
Headed NORTH, then side-tripped off on a beautiful scenic drive into Caribou Hills...just look at the fire weed covered hills!! What a sight!!
...to the Russian Village of Nikolaevsk...to check off yet another Russian Orthodox Church. A new church is being built next to the old church...I couldn’t find any info on that project...but those golden spires will be magnificent!!
There is also a quaint Russian Cafe there—The Samovar...but we opted to forgo that stop this trip. The Village is very quiet...far enough from the highway so there was NO road noise!!...just birds...and wind...BEAUTIFUL!!
...continuing on...next stop was Anchor Point.
On a clear day...nice view of the volcano range across the inlet...but STILL a lovely time at the beach!!
There were MANY eagles and TONS of seagulls feeding on the beach...some fisher folks had dumped fish remains there...so it was a feeding frenzy!! Also, saw a juvenile eagle.
A quick photo-op at the Ninilchik Russian Orthodox Church...and then on to the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center in Soldotna.
Off to the Captain Cook State Recreation Area...in search of “concretion” rocks!! We didn’t find any...we believe you have to actually trek out into the sand flats (dangerous) and use a shovel to dig up rocks...neither of which we were prepared to do...BUT we did find many cool different rocks there—just wish I knew a geologist who could tell me what they all are!!
We made a quick stop at a Nikiski “agate” beach, and then at a nice Kenai River scenic overlook (which would be COOL on a fishing day to watch the fishing boats return to the processor)...just so I’d know where they were for the next drive that way!!
WHAT A DAY!!...SUPER FUN...we were pooped by the time we made it back way out Homer East End Rd for the night!! PHEW!!
