AK Adventure Days 72-75: Eagle River

Recuperating after heinously LONG day yesterday...slept in after 1:15am arrival time this morning back in Eagle River!!

Organized the van—can ACTUALLY see out of the back windows to safely back up now!!...sorted through stuff...made a pile for the thrift store—YAY!!  The van is feeling good and ready to go...will just need to filter water to fill all of my water bottles...last load of laundry...buy some travel groceries...gas....

Had to go back to the auto repair shop—AARGH!!...for some reason the electric windows and turn signals stopped working...found out it was a failing ignition switch!!...double AARGH!!...but...glad to get the windows rolled back UP before the drive out...and the next rain storm!!

While running errands with sister...had a little tourist drive into Anchorage...a true AK vehicle—tires inside back seat, on top and a little tire strapped onto the front bumper!!...painted trash cans—a novel “mural” idea!!...the rose hips around the area are ripening up!!

Days of chores...organizing...packing...we’re ready to head off to Skagway tomorrow.  We were told that drive was better than to Haines....We’ll take the ferry from Skagway to Haines and then on to Juneau.

We have a couple of tourism stops between here and Skagway...and the AK Ferry system is currently on strike...so not really sure what day we’ll be able to get onto the ferry!!...Sister has to be at new job on the 12th...so something has to happen between now and then!!...I’d like to have a few days in Juneau to be a tourist!!...on to the “driving out”  adventure!!

AK Adventure Day 71: Talkeetna & Denali

...needing a break from the chores....we decided to make the scenic drive to Willow through the Hatcher Pass...and then on to Talkeetna.

Lovely drive, with absolutely nary a soul on the road!!  Probably because it was a rainy day!!  On to Talkeetna for brunch at the Talkeetna Roadhouse.

What a treasure Talkeetna is!!...quirky...artsy-fartsy...boutiquey...and FULL of tourist this rainy day!!

We walked over to the confluence of 3 rivers—the Talkeetna, Susitna, and Chulitna. Beautiful!!

We visited the Talkeetna Ranger Station...watched a chilling video about folks who climb up Mount Denali. Check out that cool little Port-a-loo...pack in/pack out...leave no trace...of any kind except footprints!!

Talkeetna’s version of the mural project....

We decided...what the heck!!...we are SO CLOSE to Denali Park and Refuge...let’s just GO!!...so...off we went...and we were so glad we did!! We opted to drive in the allowable 15 miles instead of to take a bus tour.

Beautiful scenery...went on a 2 mile hike...and saw a bull and cow moose, and several wild rabbits!!...SHUCKS...didn’t see a caribou...even though there were reported sightings of one near the park road.

Lovely evening drive back to Eagle River. Enough AK summer daylight at 11:15pm to still see Hurricane Gulch!!

On the way back we actually saw the peak of Denali...so...I suppose now I can qualify for just a tiny portion of 30% of people who actually SEE Mount Denali!!

...Eagle River arrival time...1:15AM!!...PHEW...whirlwind tourism!!...LOVE IT!!
