AK Adventure Days 25-28: Callahan’s Farmstead Homer

Wonderful time at the 5 acre Callahan farmstead out East End Road in Homer.

Buy FISH from the Callahans!!...they are Seine Commercial Salmon Fisherpersons...and direct market their fish!!

The Callahan farmstead currently has Feta the milk cow, and her baby; a breeding pair of pigs with 2 remaining piglets; many chickens of various breeds/sizes, a standard poodle and a 1 year old baby girl!!

There has also been ducks, goats and rabbits at various other times. They sell fresh milk and eggs, along with meat livestock.

They dug a shallow well themselves...for watering the garden and livestock...they have bee hives...and have a nice duck pond.

They built their lovely home AND all of the outbuildings themselves!!...including cutting and planing the timber!!

They cut ALL of their own firewood...and the wood stove is their ONLY heat source!!

They are TRUE Alaskan farmsteaders!!  They hope to purchase a much larger piece of property (150 acres)  next year, to expand their farm holdings, expand the garden, add hay fields, and hopefully, to incorporate a high tunnel greenhouse.

I helped clean up the deck and yard from the winter to get ready for the baby’s upcoming 1st b’day party...helped with laundry and some cooking, babysat, ...and built a cold compost pile.

It was a very enjoyable week!!
